Shihiya School

Spallumcheen Band Shihiya School serves approximately 20 students, from age 4 to grade 4. It is operated by the Spallumcheen Band to provide its youth with quality education in a setting conducive to maintaining traditional cultural values.

Location
Shihiya School is located on Jackpine Rd. on the Spallumcheen Band lands. The school is approximately 4 km south of Enderby, BC. Mixed forestlands and active fields growing rye and hay pleasantly surround the site.

Facilities
The school is housed in two buildings. One is a portable classroom with wheelchair access, currently serving the needs of the younger children (K4/K5). The other building, a log construction with two floors, houses grades 1 to 4.

The school grounds are grassed and treed, and there is both a complete playground and a paved play area with a basketball hoop.

Personnel
Shihiya School currently has two full-time teachers. One is responsible for the K4/K5 class (1/2 day and full day attendance, respectively), and the other teacher educates the older children (grades 1 to 4). The school¹s teachers are fully qualified to teach in British Columbia, and renew their professionalism with frequent attendance at seminars and workshops.

Spallumcheen Band Programs
Shihiya School follows the provincial IRPs in the same way that publicly funded schools do. Report cards refer to students meeting or exceeding expectations generally held for children of a given age. Academic planning and delivery are performed similarly to publicly funded schools.

Students receive physical education daily, whether on the grounds, in the school, or at the gymnasium of M.V. Beattie School in Enderby.

Shihiya School implements a language program in cooperation with the Spallumcheen Band. The regular teachers and support workers support the instruction provided in class by two language teachers. Other cultural activities are planned throughout the school year.

Music instruction is provided weekly, and is also part of daily instructional activities. Seasonal activities include cross-country skiing, ice-skating, and swimming. The school has a computer lab that serves to support instruction in all areas in addition to technology education.

Shihiya School has retained the services of a trained Speech and Language Pathologist for several years. Students who are experiencing difficulties in these areas receive excellent support weekly, as well as during regular class time, following the pathologist¹s recommendations.
