Kukpi7 Christian’s Report April-May-June-Mid July 2011

Weytk ren kw’seltkten; Hello my relatives; there is a lot more detailed information available on the different meetings and issues that I have raised in my report if you require additional information contact Theresa William at the office with a specific request; I have attempted to give you the highlights of the issues I am dealing with that are either a political or economic nature in our territory not on reserve.

Wunuxtsin – Kukpi7 Christian Splatsin

March 14th 2011 – Community to community session with Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Enderby, discussed numerous issues and dialogue on creating a protocol to work with the City on common areas.

March 15th 2011 - Kukpi7 & Tk’wamipla7 meeting

March 16th 2011 Information sharing meeting on BC Hydro with member bands of SNTC, identifying common areas of concern.

March 17th 2011 First Nations Social organizations meeting co-hosted First Nations Health Council and First Nations Child & Family Wellness Council – creating a common agenda that places the Children and families at the centre to effect change on the ground.

March 19th 2011 UBC Population and Public health Lecture with Grand Chief Doug Kelly on the emerging issues for First Nations Health agenda in BC

March 21st 2011 – Participated in the Walk from Chamber of Commerce to Timber Creek Hall to recognize the International Day to end Racism.

March 22nd 2011 Participated and spoke at the opening ceremonies for the 10th Anniversary BC Aboriginal Diabetes Conference – Teleconference call with MCFD Dave Stephenson on issues related to First Nations Child and Family Wellness Council

March 23rd 2011 Participated in 10th Anniversary BC Aboriginal Diabetes Conference

March 24th 2011 Tour of Partner Horizon North’s manufacturing facility in Kamloops – Sexqeltkemc Enterprises Inc business meeting to discuss ongoing establishment of camp services contract in partnership with Horizon North.

March 28th 2011 8:00 am Teleconference call with MCFD staff; Stsmamlt Session with Elders; Members and Stsmamlt staff – other staff and Chief and Council; small group process to dialogue these questions:
1. –How do we create the Advisory panel
1.a –How can we Distance Chief and Council (C&C) from child welfare (CWP) decision making and clarify decision making and lines of authority. What steps need to be taken.
2. – How can we Educate registered Splatsin members on By-law
3. – How can we Involve Elders in the By-law process and issues
4. –How do we create the regulations needed to address issues raised

March 30th 2011 Sexqeltkemc Political Joint Councils meeting hosted by Neskonlith – Main points of discussion organizational chart and how we regionally govern the territory as a collective.

March 31st 2011 Splatsin hosted the Splatsin Secwepemc Elders Council – highlights from the meeting

- We must learn in order to teach our young. It is now our responsibility no one will do it for us but us

- gathering on our lands for medicine gathering to teach build a building mentor our young people

- be ready every day

- camp out 2 times per year 10 days use the language – starts in the family; people worked together without being paid; ceremony very important – do not understand law(white concept) in our way it is respect; Once a month Elders luncheon bring in the youth speak in secwepmectsin tell them stories; give family histories to the young people;

- Annie interpret for old ones in Secwepmecsteen lonesome to hear the language;

- cultural training building for the Nation; language; boys – girls training; Elders home;

Casimir – take young people to the mountains teach them

April 4th 2011 First Nations Child and Family Wellness Council Meeting with Deputy Minister Stephen Brown and Minister Mary McNeil; outlined issues related to overall concern for high number of aboriginal children in care of MCFD and our role to as Chiefs to advocate for the Indigenous Child and the Centre Action Plan to create resources for the community to be able to respond to the crisis.

April 20th 2011 Splatsin Community of the Secwepemc Nation is coordinating the 2011 Sturgeon Gathering. The Sturgeon Gathering is building on the past Sturgeon Release events which have been held successfully every year since 2008. It is an event to enhance and promote community awareness and educate individuals on the importance of White Sturgeon to the Columbia Basin ecosystem and First Nations culture. This year the event will be held in Revelstoke on Wednesday, April 20th 2011 at the Centennial Ball Park, adjacent Riverside Area and the Revelstoke Community Centre.

April 27th 2011 BC Hydro working group at SNTC office – Secwepemc Fisheries Commission (SFC) and the Nicola Tribal Association (NTA) will be co – hosting a teleconference on April 27, 2011: 3pm – 4:30 to discuss the possibility of legal action against DFO regarding their management of Spring 4-2 chinook.

April 28th 2011 Meeting with Deputy Minister Stephen Brown and Co-chairpersons of the First Nations Child and Family Wellness Council to discuss the implementation of the Indigenous Child at the Centre Action Plan. Frank dialogue on the state of First Nations children in BC, how can we work together effectively?

Recommendation 2: call a peoples assembly to get some direction from the people to set out on a plan for strategy. September 18 is the anniversary when we went logging (12yrs) 5 months time frame till Court Date.
