Linden MacIntyre of the CBC’s Fifth Estate, author of “The Bishop’s Man” and Giller Award winner will give the 3rd Dave Barrett Lecture on Child, Family and Community Welfare

Monday April 2, 2012

10:30 am to 12:30 pm

Thompson Rivers University, Irving K. Barber Centre

He will discuss how he came to write The Bishop’s Man after a lot of reflection on the family secrets that motivate adult behaviour and thereby shape the hearts and minds of children. The secrets are often rooted in violence of some kind. He will talk about how and why adults exploit children, and then silence them, and
will deal with larger institutional responses to abuse and scandal.

Linden MacIntyre has been a co-host of the CBC’s Fifth Estate since 1990. He has approached the theme of sexual abuse from several angles. In 2010, the CBC’s Fifth Estate broadcast “Betrayal”, ” MacIntyre’s personal essay on how the cycle of sexual abuse that plagued small communities in Nova Scotia years ago continues to haunt them today – in new and unexpected ways”(CBC Fifth Estate). In 2001, he hosted “The scandal of the century”, a program about the false accusations by 9 foster children against their foster parents in Saskatchewan. His second novel, The Bishop’s Man, tells the story of the troubled conscience of the assistant to a Catholic bishop responsible for managing the diocese’s sexually abusive priests. Published in August 2009, it won the 2009 Scotiabank Giller Prize. His third novel, “Why Men Lie”, will be released in April 2012 by Knopf Random Publishing Group. It is the story of Effie, the middle-aged sister of the troubled priest at the centre of The Bishops Man. MacIntyre commented on his third novel, “Im interested in the womans point of view as she watches the men around her getting older and stupider (Knopf Random Publishing).

MacIntyre has won nine Gemini Awards, including three Gordon Sinclair Awards (best overall broadcast journalist). He has written and reported for numerous other award- winning projects including an International Emmy (“To Sell A War”), several Anik Awards (“The Trouble With Evan”, “Promises of Glory”, “To Sell A War”, etc.), and the Michener Award for meritorious public service in journalism (“His Word Against History – Steven Truscott’s Story and Scandal of the Century – Saskatchewan Justice”). He has also written and presented award-winning documentaries for the PBS program Frontline.

Between1981-86, MacIntyre worked for CBC’s groundbreaking national current affairs program, The Journal, and was assigned to documentary reporting in various parts of the world, including the Middle East, Central America and the USSR.

For two seasons, he was host and national editor for Sunday Morning on CBC Radio; then in 1988, MacIntyre returned to television and The Journal, and worked extensively on stories related to the collapse of the Soviet Union.

MacIntyre was born in St. Lawrence, Nfld., and grew up in Port Hastings, Cape Breton, N.S.
